About Maafushi Island
Maafushi Island, nestled in the Maldives, is a tropical paradise offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and vibrant local culture. Located in the Kaafu Atoll, just a 30-minute speedboat ride from Malé, Maafushi is one of the most accessible local islands for tourists. It is the most popular local island in the Maldives, as it was the first to welcome tourism in 2009.
Maafushi is also known as the “Prison Island” due to the prison located at one end of the island. However, don’t worry, it’s perfectly safe. The island is relatively small and oval-shaped, allowing you to walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes.
Maafushi stands out from all other local islands in the Maldives. Many locals even say that the island is not the “real” Maldives. It’s like a concrete jungle, fully commercialized and adapted for tourism. There are very few trees left on the island, with most of the land occupied by buildings.
